Spoon live in ’05

Spoon starts a three night run at the Filmore tonight. I came to the Spoon party well beyond fashionably late so this will be my first time seeing them. I know, I don’t get out much. But since falling hard for Gimme Fiction (made my best of 2005 list) forces have conspired against me finding myself in the same room.  Their latest effort Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is just as strong, making my best of ’07 list. Barring any further twists of fate I’ll be catching the closer Wednesday. I’m also really looking forward to opening act Heavenly States. Kudos to Britt & Co. for giving a fine local act an opportunity like this!

The Sly Oyster has posted a couple of new songs (one featuring Janet Weiss) from frontman Britt Danile’s solo set in Portland earlier this month. Check them out here. Unless his long rumored solo debut is actually going to happen it’s very likely these will show up on the next Spoon album proper.  Here’s hoping they pull these out for the Fillmore run but what would really make my life complete (for the next couple of weeks anyway) would be seeing their killer cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Rocks Off”.

Rocks Off (from their set in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park back in July thanks to the bottomless well that is the Internet Archive, the whole show is here.)

Since Gimme Fiction will always have a special place in my heart I thought I’d post this live set from 2005.

Spoon live at Village Studio, L.A. 5/13/05 (broadcast by KCRW)

New music

Paul Weller – 22 Dreams

The first lock for my Best Of The Year list. The Modfather takes a bold, audacious step outside the comfort zone that dulled his last couple of albums and succeeds in spades. Solo record #9 is his most varied yet, touching on Brit folk, blue eyed soul, jazz, crunching rock, driving psychedelia, Middle Earstern grooves and piano ballads. So inspiring to see an artist still able challenge himself after 30+ years. Guests include Robert Wyatt, Noel Gallagher, Graham Coxon (on drums, only Weller could bring together the Hatfield & McCoy of Brit rock), Gem Archer and Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Cradock is all over this (he also gets a production credit).

Buy it at Yep Roc records.

22 Dreams

Cold Moments

Blitzen Trapper – Furr

Another record that’s definitely made my Best Of The Year short list. The finest 6 piece band in Portland delivers an adventurous stunner on their fourth record. There’s so much going in every song I feel like I’ve heard a whole record’s worth of ideas after two or three tracks. Where do I start? It’s the Kinks meets Of Montreal, early Dylan meets Wilco, After The Gold Rush era Neil Young meets Beck.  And I’m diggin’ the 80′s hair metal logo!

Fire + Fast Bullets

Gold For Bread

Furr is out this Tuesday on Sub Pop.  BT will be playing at the Independent in SF with Parson Red Heads December 2nd. Click on the cover or head over to their myspace page for more tunes plus videos & tour dates.

All Girl Summer Fun Band – Looking Into It

Speaking of bands from Portland with records coming out Tuesday (am I the king of the segue or what?), The All Girl Summer Fun Band has been making the same playfully punky pop we’ve come to love for almost ten years. Think the grittier side of Stereo Total meets the Shangri-La’s and you’re close. I am utterly unable to stop smiling, tapping my toes & bopping my head from side  when these ladies come skipping out of my speakers. Their 3rd record  will be on their own AGSFB label.

Drive-By Truckers & The Hold Steady presale tomorrow!

The rumors are true. While this paring might seem odd check this quote from Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn: “Seeing the Drive-By Truckers on the Southern Rock Opera tour was instrumental to me wanting to start a band and play music again. That band is the Hold Steady. This tour brings it full circle, and it will be a pleasure and an honor to be able to share a stage with the Truckers. We’re gonna have a really good time.” I’m sure a beer or two will be swilled onstage. Fans of either band will get a chance to see one or the other headline as they’re taking turns closing the show on what they’re calling the “Rock And Roll Means Well Tour”

The online pre-sale starts tomorrow at 10 AM Eastern time. Click the picture above to buy tickets. To get you in the mood here are some live tunes from both bands:

Dave Gleason Acoustic Set on KALX

Dave Gleason and his band the Wasted Days have been a shining example of what the Bay Area country music scene has to offer for over seven years and three fine albums. I love how they apply a hard rock sensibility to their particularly twangy blend of Bakersfield honky tonk and Gram Parsons style California country rock then infuse it with enough outlaw attitude to make Waylon Jennings and David Allen Coe proud. Dave stopped by KALX during my show last Thursday to shoot the breeze and play a couple of tunes. I won’t bore you by posting our idle chatter but the songs are damn fine. Enjoy:

The Blue Side Of The World Brand spankin’ new tune
The Good’s Been Gone A beautifully spare rendition of a song that appeared on his last record Just Fall To Pieces (right, click the picture to buy it)
The Last Fool At The Bar A real cry in your beer heart breaker penned by Mike Stinson, the king of L.A.’s neo honky-tonk scene

To hear what Dave sounds like with a full band check out his myspace page.

Dave Gleason’s Wasted Days are doing a couple of Bay Area shows in March. For a beer soaked good time check him out here:

Thursday, March 13th at the Sweetwater Sation in Larkspur w/ East Bay country outfit Red Meat
Saturday, March 15th at The Starry Plough in Berkeley w/ Johnny Dilks

Quick note about the tunes

The mp3s on this blog are to give folks a little taste. Imagine they're those little pouches on the bag your Sunday paper comes in. You know, the one's with a packet containing just enough toothpaste to brush your teeth once or twice. They are left up for a limited time. If you find something you like support the artists by dragging your friends to their shows and/or buying their CDs/records/schwag. If you are the artist (or their label/representative) and don't want an mp3 on here, please email me (mike@nowhearthismusic.com) and I'll remove it posthaste.
