It seems like eons ago that Neko Case’s last record, Fox Confessor Brings The Food, made my Best Of 2006 list. The three separate editions doled out since its initial release only served to make me hungrier for new material. A double live disc in 2007 (of a performance recorded 4 years prior), another record and tour with the New Pornographers as well as collaborations with Crooked Fingers, M. Ward and Giant Sand were fine placeholders but when was that new record coming out?! Well come March 3rd the wait is over. Anti- will release Middle Cyclone and I for one cannot wait. If the lead single is any indicator we’ve got some classic Neko to look forward to. Check it out:

Her regular band (are they still called her boyfriends?) of guitarist Paul Rigby, bassist Tom V. Ray, drummer Barry Mirochnick, multi-instrumentalist Jon Rauhouse and backing vocalist Kelly Hogan are joined by the likes of M. Ward, Garth Hudson, Sarah Harmer, and members of The New Pornographers, Los Lobos, Calexico, The Sadies, Visqueen, The Lilys and Giant Sand.
After a handful of gigs in Europe later this month Neko will be hitting the South and Midwest with Crooked Fingers. Nothing scheduled for the West Coast yet but I’m really hoping Crooked Fingers will be making that swing too. I’m dying to hear “Your Control” live (you can find the studio version here).
In related Neko news, the only record by Maow, the slightly countrified punk pop band Neko played drums (and only occasionaly sang) in is getting the remaster treatment from Mint Records. The Unforgiving Sounds Of… should be in a record store near you.
Tickets for M. Ward’s show at the Palace Of Fine Arts on March 5 went on sale today. They should go fast considering they had to put a stop to the pre-sale a day and a half early. Click here to get ‘em. I’m dying to hear tracks from Hold Time, due out in mid February. Guests include Jason Lytle (ex Grandaddy), Lucinda Williams, Tom Hagerman (DeVotchka) and She & Him partner in crime Zooey Deschanel.
To get get you in an M mood here’s a bunch of songs from his tour opening for Beth Orton. See, Mr. Ward was making with the lady duet thing a good two years before he ever met Zooey. Many thanks to Aquarium Drunkard for originally posting these…

In my post about Studs Terkel’s passing I lamented the fact the he’d just missed the election of our nation’s first black president. Now another crusader for civil rights will miss Obama’s inauguration. Odetta, who passed way Tuesday, was scheduled to perform at that historic event. That surely would have been something to see. I found better pictures of her but none seemed as appropriate as the the shot above of her performing before the crowd assembled at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963, singing into the same microphones that would broadcast Martin Luther King’s dream.
This is a previously unreleased track from the reissue of Odetta & Larry (retitled The Tin Angel after the nightclub in San Francisco where it was recorded live back in 1953). Her passionate delivery even at that early stage is riveting. Goodbye Odetta.
The Queen of Peruvian exotica passed away Saturday morning. An amazing 5 octave vocal range and a presence shrouded in as much myth as Machu Picchu will be missed. Here’s a couple of tracks to ease the crunch of election tension.
Jamaican music icon and Rocksteady Godfather Alton Ellis passed away at the Hammersmith Hospital Friday night at the age of 70 following a protracted battle with lymphatic cancer. The father of Lovers Rock was experiencing a well deserved career resurgence until collapsing at London’s 100 Club back in August. A better tribute than I could possibly manage is penned by Laurence Cane-Honeysett at the Trojan Records website.
Stuck here in the Bay Area when you want to be in Black Rock City? Good news! You can head to the East Bay for a sweet rockin’ alternative to Burning Man called Burnout Man. In it’s second year, the fest is delivering ten bands for only ten bucks (though I’m told no one will be turned away for lack for funds). You can’t beat that with a sweaty hippy. It’s all going down tomorrow at the Grant Irish Warehouse, 2230 Poplar St. @ West Grand in Oakland.
I host the Cuppa Joe show on KALX in Berkeley every other Wednesday from 6 to 9 PM. You can tune at 90.7 or online by clicking HERE

Quick note about the tunes
The mp3s on this blog are to give folks a little taste. Imagine they're those little pouches on the bag your Sunday paper comes in. You know, the one's with a packet containing just enough toothpaste to brush your teeth once or twice. They are left up for a limited time. If you find something you like support the artists by dragging your friends to their shows and/or buying their CDs/records/schwag. If you are the artist (or their label/representative) and don't want an mp3 on here, please email me (mike@nowhearthismusic.com) and I'll remove it posthaste.
